Our Upcoming Meeting

Program:

Title: We will have panel of professional women discussing three different topics dealing with Women’s Health. We all need advice in this area, so come learn how to improve your health from these three experts that are passionate about you.

Presenters:

Kristie Lemon: Topic: The heavy value of weight bearing exercise, stretching, balance and how moving will improve your quality of life. Bio: Kristie fell in love with the outdoors growing up in Boulder, Colorado. She is an avid backpacker, bicyclist, snowboarder, and a want to-be paraglider. Her husband Scott and she own and operate High Desert Oasis.

Bari Liebowitz: Topic: What roles do fats in our diets have and how do we to incorporate them into our diets. Making healthy food choices and how to find accessible organic foods and hormone-free, naturally raised meats. Bio: I am a sports chiropractor with a Master's degree in nutrition and many years of experience in functional medicine. I enjoy doing crossfit, running, cycling, hanging out with my dogs, cooking and dinner parties. I grew up in Brooklyn, NY and then lived in California for 17 years before relocating to Bend in April, 2010. I live with my life partner, Terry and our three dogs.

Patricia Grady: Topic: Small ways to make big changes. We live in an all or nothing culture, but making small changes over time will allow you to live your life, enjoying what you like to enjoy, while making it better and healthier. Health is about “can.” What you can’t do doesn’t matter. Bio: I moved to Bend in 1998 from Boston with my husband Paul. We love the climate and the outdoors and so does our Siberian husky. I’m passionate about finding balance in all things; life does have room for broccoli and cupcakes.

Weight, Weight, Don’t Tell Me

Do you know what the main ingredient in physical fitness is?

The 5 factors of fitness are sleep, water, food, aerobic conditioning, and weight-bearing exercise. If you are looking to improve your fitness sleep 8 hours; drink 1 gallon of water a day; eat low-carbohydrate, high protein food; do aerobic conditioning; but weight bearing exercise is the most overlooked and important ingredient to women’s physical fitness.

Here are 3 important statistics taken from the International Osteoporosis Foundation:

  • 1 in 3 women over 50 will experience osteoporotic fractures.
  • In white women, the lifetime risk of hip fracture is 1 in 6, compared with a 1 in 9 risk of a diagnosis of breast cancer.
  • Between 1990 and 2000, there was a nearly 25% increase in hip fractures worldwide.
Why is there such a huge increase in hip fractures? The answer is connected to the same dilemma we are having with obesity: We eat more calorie-dense food, with a lower quality of nutrients, we sit more and we move less. Meaning we are expending less energy than what we are consuming and the quality of food we get is lower. The added body weight combined with a weakened skeletal structure, due to moving less and not getting enough nutrients from our food, leads to hip fractures.

This trend in hip fractures should send a shudder through all of us, as it is a radically increasing marker of a decline in our health as a population.

I have a prediction: In the next 5 years, every doctor is going to prescribe a minimum of one weight lifting workout per week, it may be called, The Owners Manual for the Body ™. It will be the new diagnostic standard measurement for health. It will become the most important vital statistic, even before blood pressure, and the standard question will be, “How many times did you work-out last month?”

According to the CDC’s Recommendations Regarding Selected Conditions Affecting Women’s Health 95% of hip fractures are caused by falls. Falls are preventable. Weight-bearing exercise helps improve balance. Knowing where our bodies are in space and the resulting balance come from the stimulation of our proprioceptors, both sensory and motor nerves. Our proprioceptors send and receive information about balance, coordination and agility. We can walk upstairs without looking down at each step because of our proprioception.

We used to carry our babies on our hips, dig for roots, run from predators, even hunt, and now we play on the computer, talk on the phone and drive our car from here to there. Just for giggles, try parking in the farthest spot of the parking lot once in awhile. Give yourself a challenge to explore new ideas about what being physically fit means to you. Stand on one leg in the grocery store line. Walk backwards upstairs, carefully now.

Instead of hoping for the magic pill (when you find one please let me know), it is important to be realistic about our approach to health. There are so many diseases we can avoid; why wouldn’t we? If I said, “Go to the store and pick up a box of heart disease,” you would laugh – except that is exactly what we are doing. We are rolling the dice with our quality of life.

The amazing thing is how easy it is to take charge of our fitness. It may not seem like it is, but when given the correct motivators and enough information, everyone can trend in the right direction. I like to think of fitness as a spectrum; we are all on it somewhere. It is important to focus on tipping the teeter-totter in our favor. If you have “tried everything and nothing works,” you need to keep trying. I am not callus, just seasoned. There is a way to make exercise fun and feel good.

Women who do two weight-lifting sessions per week can reduce their body fat by 3% in 10 weeks, according to an article in Women’s Health magazine. I still see women who think they can sweat their fat off on the treadmill. It doesn’t happen by cardio alone. In 2010, 17% of children and 1/3 of adults in the US were obese. Clearly, what we are doing to address this epidemic is not working. The truth is we need to embrace working our muscles with weights before our weight wipes us out.

If there are 5 factors to fitness and you start with addressing just one, you will make progress. If you start with the most important one, you will move mountains. Try one weight-bearing workout this week. If done correctly, you should feel a good kind of soreness in the leg muscles, the chest muscles, the middle-of-your-back muscles and your abdominal muscles. Maybe you already lift weights. Good job. But the statistics say you are probably among those people who are waiting until next Monday to start your lifting program.

We can gain and retain balance, strength and bone density, eliminate obesity and reclaim our health all with one small change. Lift weights, and not the 3-pound dumbbells. Lift heavy-enough weights to challenge your muscle strength. If done correctly, you will encourage muscle gain.

Science has proven muscle tissue burns more calories than adipose tissue. Think about it, muscle burns fat; fat doesn’t burn fat so when you are at rest the added muscle burns fat. Muscle takes up less space, so you fit your clothes better. Muscle gives us coordination, balance and ability to open our own pickle jars. Finally, muscle contributes to your overall health, and obviously fat does not!

Your health matters. See you in the gym!
